Abstract

Climate uncertainty and extreme market price fluctuations place dryland farmers in the highlands of Pujon District in serious economic vulnerability, while the demands of meeting basic needs continue to increase. This study aims to analyze the survival strategies constructed by farmers in response to these economic pressures. Using a descriptive qualitative approach in Wiyurejo Village, data was collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results show that farmers implement multiple adaptation strategies: active strategies through job diversification into non-agricultural sectors and the integration of crop-livestock systems to support daily cash flow; passive strategies through subsistence ethics in the form of drastic reductions in food consumption and the postponement of secondary needs; and network strategies that utilize social capital through informal loans from relatives and patron-client relationships with collectors. The discussion highlights that the integration of the vegetable and dairy sectors is key to the unique resilience of Pujon farmers, distinguishing them from other regions. In conclusion, farmers rationally optimize all their socio-economic assets to maintain their families' livelihoods, even though their bargaining position is often constrained by asymmetrical market structures.
